Abstract
The article deals with the interpretive function of language in legal discourse of the speeches of defense and prosecution. This is a case study of oral arguments in criminal proceedings that analyses the cognitive strategies that underlie the choice of lexical items by the parties in interpreting the same referential situation. Profiling, generalization, classification and mode categorization are considered.
