Abstract: The paper proposes an approach to the contrastive study of Russian and English syntax that is based on understanding sentence patterns of a language as a limited set of signs - representers of propositional concepts, on the one hand, and is aimed at preventing native syntax interference while teaching students to build utterances in a foreign language - on the other hand.
