Abstract: Different approaches to the study of discourse structures are discussed. An integral approach allows to interpret the structure of discourse as a unity of its cognitive, language, cultural, social and communicative structures actualized in the process of communication. A special emphasis is placed on the cognitive structure of discourse, its thematic structure and macrostructure. Perspectives of further research are outlined.
