ON VARIATION MODELS OF ENGLISH BIBLICAL IDIOMS WITH AN ANTHROPONYMIC COMPONENT: A LINGUACULTURAL STUDY

Author:  Ryzhkina E.V.

Abstract
The article highlights the way cultural knowledge underlying the semantics of idioms affects their normal functioning, including their possible discursive renovation both in synchrony and in the historical perspective. The study is carried out on the material of English idioms of biblical origin with anthroponymic components. The analysis provided shows that any kind of structural or/and semantic variation of idioms follows particular cognitive and linguistic patterns that are formed on the basis of relevant culture-related knowledge. The idioms’ anthroponymic components (that are in fact precedent names representing the culture-filtered knowledge as accepted standards and stereotypes of behavior) appear to play a crucial role in forming the variation patterns of the idioms.
