ON DOUBLE BORDERLINES BETWEEN OPINIONS AND REALITIES IN RUSSIAN DISCOURSE

Author:  Demyankov V.Z.

Abstract:  Russian modality expressions vozmožnyj ‘possible’, ‘ veroâtnyj’ ‘probable’, pravdopodobnyj ‘likely’ are linguistic means of accommodating discourse to real and fantastic worlds. These expressions mark borderlines between such worlds. Double occurrences of these expressions as well as their negations and nominalizations in a large Russian corpus illustrate semantic and pragmatic differences between these hedges.

Keywords:  language use ◆ hedging ◆ possible world semantics ◆ world-crossing marker ◆ discourse accomodation ◆ creativity of interpretation
