Abstract: The article explores new abbreviations viewed from the cognitive perspective. It demonstrates how the cognitive approach can be applied to analyzing units, the condition trends of origin, development, novel and modified formal-structural types and discursive features, paying special attention to functioning abbreviations in certain terminological paradigm. Regularities of forming such units, structures of cognitive knowledge behind them and the possibilities of polysemy developing are also discussed in the article.
