ON FIGURATIVENESS OF NON-FICTIONAL DISCOURSE

Author:  Demyankov V.Z.

Abstract:  Figurative speech and figurative thought fill in those episodes in scholarly discourse where it is impossible to speak precisely. In a way, they are a compromise between the needs of real communication and the limited epistemological ability of humans. Cognitive mechanisms of constructing and interpreting double pictures arising out of such discourse belong to the Saussurean “langage” which relies upon the pragmatically processed “langue”, i. e. the system of language pragmatically adapted to human needs.

Keywords:  figurative speech ◆ language system ◆ language use ◆ discourse accomodation ◆ creativity of interpretation
